Creative Writing and the Image (5 weeks x 2.5 hours)

Prerequisites:
This course is designed for students of all levels with aspirations in fiction writing and/or writing for magazines, newspapers.

Objective:
This 5 week course will provide students with enjoyable, inventive and pragmatic in-class writing exercises (and feedback) that will assist in writing articles and interviews for periodicals, and creating and writing fresh story concepts for both fiction and non-fiction pieces.

Week 1: Letting the Words and Ideas Flow.
· 'Easy Writing' guidelines
· Examples of exemplary writing
· The image as starting point
· Catchy and effective titles
· Timed writing 'sprint' exercises
· Inspirational quotes
· Recommended reading list and discussion
· Sharing of in-class writing
· Writing assignment 1 set

Week 2: Writing from the Image
· Warm up 'sprint' exercises
· Flashcards
· Examples of effective first lines
· Personification
· Effective simile and metaphor use
· Using humour
· Supplied topic exercises
· Writing from the image
· Sharing of in-class and assignment writing
· Writing assignment 2 set

Week 3: Powerful Beginnings and Endings
· Warm up 'sprints'
· Using first and last lines
· Writing catchy blurbs
· Story structure; examples and discussion
· 'Mystery images' envelopes
· Use of tone
· Re-writing articles
· Advice columns, Q&A creation
· Sharing of in-class writing
· Writing assignment 3 set

Week 4: Strong Character Development
· Warm up 'sprints'
· Interviewing techniques
· Pseudonym game
· Character development
· Dreams
· Haiku
· Memory writing
· Inspirational quotes
· Sharing of in-class writing
· Writing assignment 4 set

Week 5: Maximizing Your Imaginative Expression

· Use of irony, satire
· Refining your voice
· Revisions/ drafts
· Flashcards
· Magazine piece works
· Reworking proverbs/sayings
· Inspiring quotes
· Sharing of in-class writing
· Final summation
