Week 1: The Black & White Photographer
· Health & Safety Issues and Darkroom Etiquette.
· Camera basics reviewed: achieving correct exposure.
· Standard B&W film types and their characteristics.
· Photographers and their images - slide presentation.
· Project 1 set:

Week 2: B&W film developing (Project 1 due)
· Loading film tanks.
· Mixing chemicals.
· Tank agitation. · Drying films.
· Caring for films.
· How to read a negative.
· Processing troubleshooting.
· Composition - Slide Presentation.
· Project 2 set:

Week 3: Contact Printing and Photo Enlargements (Project 2 due)
· Mixing chemicals.
· Introduction to handling and exposing photographic paper.
· Using an enlarger to make a proof sheet.
· Introduction to photo enlargements.
· Project 3 set:

Week 4: Photo Enlargement - Image enhancement (Project 3 due)
· Students will process a roll of film in class under mentor's supervision.
· Using multi-contrast photographic papers.
· How to judge print contrast and exposure.
· Using contrast filters in enlarger.
· Burning and dodging the print.
· Project 4 set:

Week 5: A working method (Project 4 due)
· Students will process / print under the supervision of their mentor.
· Review of student's work in progress.
· Class discussions and open critique.
· Project 5 set

Week 6: Image Experimentation (project 5 due)
· Negative sandwiching, vignetting, printing through materials.
· Students will print under the supervision of their mentor.

Week 7: Photo Finish
· Print spotting and trimming.
· Review of student's projects.
· Class discussions and open critique.
· An introduction to Black & White Photographer 2

Prerequisites:
This course is designed for beginners and for students who have basic 35mm camera knowledge and practice.

Objective:
This 7 week course will give students the basic skills and confidence in composition, film exposure and darkroom printing, with an emphasis in creative vision.
