Media Release For immediate release Local artist exposes herself at CPC "A Decade of Being" is the latest exhibition at the CPC gallery in Byron Bay and tells the story of the ten years since Shanti Tierney last exhibited her images. It depicts the journey from the angst ridden, self obsessed young adult bent on escapism, through to adulthood, learning to give and learning to leave the fear-based self behind. "The aim of the exhibition is to reveal the gradual shifts in my work over the last decade, moving from images of myself to those of other, from darkness to light, intensity to levity," said Shanti, who was awarded first prize for colour photography in the 2002 Southern Cross Arts and Craft Festival. "I was raised in a family ruled by domestic violence and alcohol and chronic low self esteem pervaded my sense of self. The images I have chosen to exhibit here represent the processual development of 'self', first learning to speak emotionally and spiritually and the moving to a place of truly being able to give to myself and others." Shanti's images were originally black and white silver halides, printed and then painted with chemicals (bleach and developer) to create a painterly effect. Later the photos were burnt, then scanned into a computer and further digitally enhanced. "The simplest way of describing my work is that it looks like paintings," says Shanti of her photographic style. "Shanti's work uses the human form as a vehicle for her ideas and she adds layer upon layer of technique which gives all images a complexity and richness that is just exceptional.," said John de Lombardo from the Creative Photography Centre. The exhibition runs from June 7 until July 1 at CPC, 4/46 Acacia St, Byron Bay Arts and Industry Estate.
